BORDERPLEX ALLIANCE CEO ON SENATE CONFIRMATION OF LIGHTHIZER TO LEAD USTR
EL PASO, TX - Today, Robert Lighthizer, a prominent trade attorney and former deputy U.S. trade representative under President Ronald Reagan, was confirmed by the Senate to the Cabinet-level position of U.S. Trade Representative. Jon Barela, Chief Executive Officer of The Borderplex Alliance, issued the following statement:
“We welcome the opportunity to work with Robert Lighthizer as the United States Trade Representative. It is encouraging to see this position filled by someone with Mr. Lighthizer’s extensive trade policy experience, and we look forward to collaborating with him to develop policies that will promote economic prosperity.
Throughout North America, and particularly along the U.S.-Mexico border, NAFTA is a cornerstone of our economic success. In Texas, exports to Mexico have grown 354% since the adoption of NAFTA. In New Mexico, NAFTA helped exports to Mexico grow to $1.7 billion in 2015. In Cd. Juárez, NAFTA has led to the development of a robust manufacturing sector, where global companies produce goods to be exported across North America. Beyond the border region, NAFTA supports 5 million jobs nationwide and contributes $127 billion to the U.S. economy each year.
NAFTA’s potential renegotiation is an opportunity to strengthen the largest free trade zone in the world and modernize the agreement to reflect the technological advances of the last quarter century. Renegotiation must be done in the spirit of cooperation and mutual benefit to all parties.
We hope to work closely with Mr. Lighthizer on NAFTA and other trade policies to accomplish our shared goals and ensure economic prosperity across North America.”
